People often underestimate children’s ability to handle raw history. Do you want to learn more about hidden truths and narratives in our nation’s history? Do you want to learn how to make space in the classroom to come to terms with oftentimes uncomfortable truths? Come join us as we talk about how to effectively integrate multiple perspectives into the classroom to provide a more balanced curriculum in both English Language Arts and Social Studies.
Deaf and hard of hearing students are part of a largely marginalized group within society; moreover, for students of color, their history is all but ignored in standard textbooks. No wonder students may think history is dry and not relatable and ask, “What does this have to do with me?”
For the last two years, we have developed balanced, cross-curricular lessons that bring multiple perspectives to the table and highlight often overlooked or “hidden” narratives. Through this approach, we have seen a noticeable increase in our students’ level of engagement and personal investment. Workshop participants will get hands-on experience and walk away with resources for a full lesson plan.
