In 1989, a group of Deaf people met and created a visual, as well as written, manifesto. From this manifesto, the term De’VIA (Deaf View/Image Art) was born. These “founders” discovered commonalities related to artworks which express the experiences of Deaf people. Since that time, the art genre of De’VIA has exploded and De’VIA artworks have become noted cultural artifacts.
